The South African Music Business – Book Launch and Workshop

News

If the business of music is your thing, then don’t miss out on this spectacular opportunity to learn the ins-and-outs of the local entertainment world with producer and acclaimed author Jonathan Shaw.

In launching the third edition of his book, The South African Music Business, Jonathan Shaw is giving local artists, entertainers and music enthusiasts alike, the opportunity to attend a free master class workshop in music business on 30 August at Skoobs, Montecasino.

The workshop is aimed at both novices and professionals and will be based around a game, providing participants insight into the music business in a new and exciting way.

The South African Music Business was the first major textbook on the SA music industry to be published. It gained recognition and found national distribution early on. The book explains the structure, law, finance, management and marketing of the the recorded music sector, live music sector and music publishing sector.

It was revised in 2010 and the second edition stood the test of time becoming a set work at various tertiary institutions. It wasn’t until 2015 that it had to be completely revised and updated again. Now, in 2018, the book is finally launched as a remarkable, critical and invaluable resource for all musicians, composers, professionals and organisations facing the challenging world of music business.

“If there is any musician who is serious about their craft or career, this book should definitely be part of their collection.” – Kahn Morbee, The Parlotones

Jonathan says, “I’ve always felt that musicians should be more informed and as I’ve done many workshops in the past. I thought that doing a free workshop together with the launch would be a good way to introduce the book to people on a more practical level.”
