While the concept Andre’s stage performance has stayed much the same over the years – volunteers from the audience are brought onstage to be hypnotised – the show has somewhat evolved. The nature of suggestions have changed. This not only makes the show more interesting and varied, but there are a number of suggestions that would now be deemed offensive or crude, and these have been omitted.

Andre explains, “It is pretty much the same thing you will find if you look back at the history of hypnosis. Things that were funny 50 years ago might not appear to be funny now and often things that stopped being funny become funny again.”

Since each show is dependent on the volunteers – no two shows are ever the same – bringing about a diverse and action-packed night for both participants and viewers alike. And with every person reacting differently to Andre’s suggestion, not even Andre knows what to expect.

When asked what he enjoys most about his job, Andre says, “I enjoy entertaining people. At the end of the day my job is to entertain and if the audience leave laughing then I have done my job. My aim is to make the audience come back for more. There is no greater compliment than an audience member who comes back again and again.”

Indie Does It: Why is it that some people are not able to be hypnotised?

Andre: We hypnotise ourselves and we do this by listening to the suggestion and following the suggestion of the hypnotist. Because hypnosis is an external process in which you willingly partake you can actually go against the suggestion and not be hypnotised at all. You can also wake yourself up from the trance-like state at any time during the show, should you not be comfortable with the suggestion.

Indie Does It: Can you describe how it feels to be hypnotised?

Andre: Hypnosis feels very similar to daydreaming, you are fully aware of what you are doing and you choose to do what the hypnotist says but unlike what the mass media wishes to portray you do not enter a comatose state or state in which you have no control. We are hypnotised every day of our lives, or at least influenced on a subconscious level to respond to suggestion, it is just never called hypnosis.

Indie Does It: Do you still get nervous when going on stage and what fears do you have?

Andre: On the odd occasion, I will still get nervous but this happens very rarely. My biggest fear is rejection, I structure my shows to work every night because I am petrified that the audience might not like them.

Indie Does It: What do you do when you are not hypnotising people on stage?

Andre: I am an avid cave explorer or “Speleologist”, the more fancy name for a man who explores caves that are not open to the public.
